Marta Harnecker

The Cuadernos de Educación Popular (CEP) were a series of short, educational pamphlets created by Marta Harnecker and Gabriela Uribe after the triumph of the Unidad Popular movement in Chile, with the aim of bringing the foundations of Marxism closer to the working class. Published by Quimantú, these notebooks used clear language, educational illustrations, and an accessible design to facilitate reading in everyday spaces such as factories or unions. With mass print runs of up to 250,000 copies, they became one of the most influential Marxist publishing projects in Latin America. This book reissues and compiles the first six titles to make them available to the Chilean working class.

"Social revolutions are not made by individuals, by "personalities," no matter how brilliant or heroic they may be. Social revolutions are made by the popular masses. Without the participation of the great masses, there is no revolution. That is why one of the most urgent tasks of the moment is for workers to educate themselves, to train themselves to respond to the new responsibilities arising from the revolutionary process our country is undergoing.

But, in order to transform a given society, we must analyze that reality to enable us to act upon it. The theoretical instrument we use in this case is scientific knowledge of society, or Historical Materialism.
